A letter from one of our NM Clergy for Choice
--A few weeks ago, on a late Tuesday afternoon I was asked by the NM Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, if our family would be able to take in a sixteen year old girl from out of the city for two nights. She was scheduled to have an abortion on Friday morning. She had raised enough money for a Greyhound bus ticket, Medicaid would cover the cost of the procedure, but she had no money left for a place to stay, and she was all alone.
I explained to my daughter, age eight, and my son, age four and a half, that we would have a teenager in our guest room for two days and nights. I told them that she would be having an operation and we would need to let her rest. My daughter, very understandably, wondered why she wasn't with her family. I explained that they lived very far away. She had other questions as well. After a few minutes, my son looked at us both and declared, 'God wants us to take care of people.'
He was done. He had all the information he needed and knew what to do. We welcomed her into our home and our hearts and are glad we did.--
